How the weights are computed
Every figure is mass = volume × density, taking mild steel at 7.85 g/cm³. The shortcuts the trade uses:
- Deformed bar (rebar): kg/m = diameter² ÷ 162 (PNS 49 nominal mass).
- Round bar: kg/m = 0.006165 × diameter².
- Square bar: kg/m = 0.00785 × side².
- Flat bar: kg/m = 0.00785 × width × thickness.
- Angle bar (equal leg): kg/m = 0.00785 × (2 × leg − thickness) × thickness.
- Round pipe (GI/BI): kg/m = 0.02466 × (OD − wall) × wall.
- Square / rectangular tube: kg/m = 0.00785 × [2 × wall × (A + B) − 4 × wall²].
- MS plate: kg/m² = 7.85 × thickness; a 4×8 ft sheet is 2.97 m².

Common questions
How do you calculate the weight of steel?
Steel weight is volume × density (7.85 g/cm³ for mild steel). Handy shortcuts: rebar kg/m = diameter² ÷ 162; flat bar kg/m = width × thickness × 0.00785; plate kg/m² = 7.85 × thickness in mm. This tool applies the right formula for each section.
How do you compute rebar weight per meter?
kg/m = diameter² ÷ 162, with the diameter in millimetres. A 16mm bar is 16 × 16 ÷ 162 = 1.58 kg/m, so a 6.0m length weighs about 9.5 kg.
Are these weights exact?
No — they're theoretical (nominal). Real steel varies within mill tolerance: PNS 49 allows ±6% on a single rebar, hot-rolled sections run about ±2–3%, and light GI purlins/tube can run 10–15% under nominal. Use these to estimate; we confirm actual weight on your quote.
How many pieces of rebar are in one ton?
Divide 1000 kg by the weight of one piece. A 6.0m 16mm bar weighs about 9.47 kg, so roughly 1000 ÷ 9.47 ≈ 105 bars per metric ton. The calculator shows pieces per ton for whatever you enter.
