I-beam vs H-beam vs wide flange — what is the difference?
In PH usage they usually mean the same wide-parallel-flange section. Strictly, the classic I-beam (S-shape) has narrower, tapered flanges; the H-beam / wide flange (W-shape or JIS HW) has wide parallel flanges and is what is normally stocked and specified here.
What do the numbers in W8×18 mean?
Nominal depth in inches × weight in pounds per foot. A W8×18 is about 8 inches deep and weighs exactly 18 lb/ft (26.79 kg/m), so a 6m length is about 161 kg.
What lengths are available?
6.0m and 12.0m are the common stock lengths; 9.0m by order.
