Description
Black iron (BI) pipe is uncoated mild-steel pipe with a black mill finish, used for structural framing, gas lines, sprinkler and fire-protection piping, and general fabrication where the pipe will be painted, welded or run in dry conditions. Without galvanizing it welds cleanly and costs less than GI, making it the fabricator's choice for frames, gates, railings and welded assemblies. It is not suited to prolonged wet exposure unless coated.
BI pipe is supplied by nominal diameter and schedule in standard lengths, in plain and threaded forms. It is favoured for structural and welded work precisely because the bare surface takes a weld and a coat of paint well. See the specifications below for available sizes and schedules.
