Description
4140 steel shafting is chromium-molybdenum alloy steel bar, prized for its high strength, toughness and excellent response to heat treatment. It is the standard material for machine shafts, axles, gears, spindles and highly stressed components that must resist wear and fatigue. In its as-supplied condition it machines well, and it can be hardened and tempered to reach high strength — which is why fabricators and machinists specify 4140 where ordinary mild steel would fail.
4140 shafting is supplied in a range of diameters in standard lengths, often in an annealed or pre-treated condition ready for machining. Its alloy content and heat-treatability are what set it apart from plain-carbon round bar. Confirm the diameters and condition available in the specifications below.
