Description
The I-beam (also called an H-beam or wide-flange section depending on proportions) is the primary load-bearing member of steel-framed construction, its I-shaped cross-section engineered to carry heavy loads over spans with minimum material. The wide top and bottom flanges resist bending while the central web ties them together, giving an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio. I-beams frame warehouses, mezzanines, bridges, industrial buildings and any structure where steel carries the load.
I-beams are specified by their depth and weight-per-metre and supplied in standard lengths to structural drawings. Because they are structural, selection is driven by the engineer's design — the section size is not something to substitute casually.
